Protective Clothing
Bee suits come in different styles.
The vented suit is made with 3 layers of mesh with a veil attached. This venting is designed to let air flow through, so you keep cooler in the hotter weather.
The polycotton suit has elasticated wrists and ankles with a securely attached integral veil.
We also have a range of veils available if you don’t need to buy a suit. Also, don’t forget your gloves.
Beekeepers often wear some sort of protective clothing to protect themselves from stings. Experienced beekeepers may not wear gloves so they can feel what they are doing.
If you do get stung, scrape the stinger out quickly with your fingernail to minimize spreading of the venom.
It is generally best to wear light coloured clothing; try not to wear too colourful or dark colours, as bees see colours differently to us.
Try to wash your clothing regularly to keep stings to a minimum, as a buildup of the bees’ alarm pheromones on your suit can cause aggressive responses.
When you service your hive, keep smells to a minimum: e.g. aftershave, perfume and deodorant.
